Estimation of the finite and instanteneous helical axis from kinematic data: a comparative study

Résumé traduit

The instantaneous helical axis (IHA) concept and his finite counterpart (FHA) are widely used in biomechanics. It is used to compare the performance of different prosthesis, to compare healthy and pathological joints, to study the progression of pathologies by comparing movements' amplitude, to asses the effectiveness of a treatment or a chirurgical act.

There are many algorithms based on kinematics data to estimate helical axis, in the literature. The question is: are these algorithms equivalent?

To date, there are no many comparative studies to answer this question, and the few that exists just give a partial answer.

The scope of this work is to compare and validate eight algorithms for the estimation of the finite helical axis (FHA) and four algorithms for the estimation of the instantaneous helical axis (IHA). These algorithms are based on the trajectories of at least three non collinear markers attached to the moving rigid body. There are three distinct parts in this study. The first and second ones consist on the evaluation and comparison of the FHA's and IHA's algorithms respectively, under a Monte Carlo simulation and an experimental validation. The third part was to evaluate the approximation of the IHA by its finite counterpart (FHA).

The results showed that the filtering process and the number of markers influence the estimation of the helical axis. The eight algorithms for the FHA estimation can be divided on three classes depending on their accuracies. The four IHA's algorithms can be divided on two classes. The approximation of the IHA by the FHA is acceptable for sampling frequencies around 100 Hz and movements with maximum angular velocity around 2 rad/s.
