Aerodynamic force approximation methods for the aeroservoelastic interactions studies

Résumé traduit

Aeroservoelasticity is the result of the fusion between two important theories concerned in different aspects of aircrafts' dynamics. Aeroelasticity, on one hand, treats the flexible nature of an aircraft and studies the couplings phenomena between structural forces and aerodynamic forces. Flight controls, on the other hand, considers the aircraft as a rigid solid in a retroaction configuration exerted by the controllaws, and studies the influence of the control system over aircraft' s dynamics. Conducting an aeroservoelastic analysis on an aircraft is a complex issue, very important for the aircrafts' certification, given the fact that the instabilities arisen from adverse interactions between the structure, the aerodynamic forces and the control laws could appear in each and every point of the flight's envelope.

ln this thesis, we conceived, implemented and validated, on two different aircraft models, three new approximation methods for unsteady aerodynamic forces from frequency domain to Laplace domain, which represent original contributions which allow the analysis of aeroservoelastic interactions. The two different aircraft types are: the F/A-18 from NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, and the Challenger CL-604 from Bombardier Aeronautic.

Two new methods, CLS and CMS, are based on the classical Least Squares LS and Minimum States MS methods. In these two methods, the approximation errors between the aerodynamic forces approximated by the classical method LS (or MS) and tho se obtained with the new methods CLS or CMS have the same analytical forms as the approximated forces with the LS or MS method. The third method is called Mixed State (or the Mixed States method) and combines the formulations of forces approximated with the LS and MS methods.

Different types of results were analyzed: aerodynamic forces approximations flutter speeds and frequencies, and execution times calculated with the new methods with respect to the classical methods. Based on results obtained with the new methods versus the results obtained with the classical methods on the same aircraft models, we found that the new methods are faster and more precise than the classical methods.
