Dry machining of light metals and composites

Résumé traduit

Aluminium and magnesium are two competitive light metals with comparable mechanical properties and good possibilities of recycling. The manufacturing of magnesium is often perceived like a barrier to its use. New manufacturing techniques of magnesium from chips are being initiated especially in Japan.

To increase the wear resistance without increasing the weight of materials, new aluminium MMCs containing soft lubricating graphite particles and hard particles (silicon carbide or alumina) with improved machinability were developed. Particulate metal matrix composites (MMCs) are known for their low weight and their high wear resistance, but also for the difficulties encountered during their machining.

The dust produced during machining is very important because of its negative impact to the environment and to the health of operator. The standards which determine the concentration and the diameter of the particles allowed during dry and lubricated machining are already established by the industrial organisations. Beyond these standards produced dust becomes dangerous.

In this master thesis, we study in a comparative way the machinability of aluminium, magnesium and CMMp alloys by using the dry drilling of these three families of materials. We analyse the cutting forces and the mechanism of chip formation to explain the behaviour differences of these three materials.

We also study the principles and the conditions by which the aerosols are produced during dry machining by analyzing the influence of the cutting parameters and the various conditions of machining on the aerosols concentrations.

This study will allow to predict the cutting forces and thus the energy requirements, also to analyse the influence of cutting parameters, type of material and reinforcing particulates on cutting forces behaviour. Moreover the study of dust will allow us to be able to analyse the principles of their formation, to control and to reduce their concentration during machining.
