Strenghtening with CFRP composite concrete beams reinforced with the Kahn system

Résumé traduit

Among the reinforced concrete structures build over 70 years ago, several present structural deficiencies or insufficient capacity to response to new requirements or new use. The rehabilitation of these structures is a challenge that structural engineers must overtake to propose economical and safe technical solutions.

Advanced composite materials (ACM) to strengthen reinforced concrete structures is an interesting option. ACM have interesting characteristics and are easy to apply. lt has been used on several applications to strengthen concrete structures.

This report presents the experimental and theoretical results of three reinforced concrete beams strengthened with ACM. These beams were taken from an existing building, the Eaton building on the Ste-Catherine Street in·Montreal and have an internal steel reinforcement system known as the 'Kahn system'. They were tested in their initial condition under a 4 points load test for their flexural capacity and under a 3 points load test for their shear capacity. All experimental results were compared to the theoretical results given by the 'Joint Code' 1920- 1940 and the Canadian standard CAN3-A.23.3 (1995). The beams were then repaired and strengthened with ACM made of carbon fibres reinforced polymer (CFRP), before being tested again.

The final results show the technical feasibility of using ACM to repair and strengthen existing reinforced concrete beams. The following observations can be made:
(a) The delamination observed on the beams reduced their flexural capacity by 30% in respect to their theoretical original tested capacity.
(b) Strengthening with CFRP increased the flexural capacity of the beams by 58% in respect to their original tested flexural capacity
(c) Strengthening with CFRP increased the shear capacity of the beams by 44% in respect to their original tested capacity.
(d) The flexural ductility of the beams remained unchanged before and after the rehabilitation (around 3.4).
