Structure and properties study of titane-nickel shape memory alloys after nanocrystallizing thermomechanical treatments

Résumé traduit

Shape memory alloys (SMA) are a class of material presenting exceptional properties such as recovery strain and recovery stress. Thus, the SMA are used in the actuator applications ( one-way shape memory effect: SME) and in the superelastic applications (SE in biomedical devices). The properties of the SMA are strongly influenced by chemical composition of alloys and by the final steps of fabrication, which are the cold working (CW) as well as the post-deformation annealing (PDA). Thus, the combined
thermomecanical treatment allows improving SMA properties.

The thermal (differential scanning calorimetry), mechanical (tensile test) and functionnal experiments (recovery strain ans recovery stress) were performed on Ti-50.0at.%Ni and Ti-50.7at.%Ni shape memory alloys. These two alloys allow obtaining the SME and SE effects respectively.

A technique of severe cold rolling was developed. The alloys were subjected to the maximum level that can be induced by cold rolling (true strain e = 1.55-1.9) followed by post-deformation annealing (300 to 700°C). This level of cold-work permits to induce the partial amorphisation of structure, which can be nanocrystallized by the following PDA.

The results of previous work consisting in cold-work (true strain 0.3-0.88) of the same alloys were collected in order to perform the comparative analysis of influence of cold work and post-deformation annealing on thermal, mechanical and functional properties.

For the two alloys, the thermal experiments show that the increase of cold-work increases the amorphouse volume fraction. Subsequent post-deformation annealing leads to the nanocrystallization of amorphous regions. A decreasing of the grain size of nanocrystals shifts the temperature of direct martensitic transformations to lower temperatures broadens the temperature range of the transformations and completely suppress the transformations in grains smaller than 60 nm.

The isothermal tensile tests showed that the increase of cold-work enhance the true yield stress. The phenomene of broadening of the temperature range of martensitique transformations and enhancing of the true yield stress permits to obtain the superelastic behaviour after e = 0.88-1.9 in the equiatomic Ti-Ni alloy that generally demonstrate shape memory effect. The formation of nanostructure in two alloys widens considerably the superelastic temperature range.

In the case of equiatomic Ti-Ni alloy, for all levels of cold-work, the maxima of the free recovery strain and constraint recovery stress are obtained after post- deformation annealing in the 350-400°C temperature range. For a moderately cold-worked material (e = 0.3-0.88), this temperature range corresponds to polygonization; for a severely coldworked material ( e = 1.9), it corresponds to formation of nanostructure with grain sizes in the range of 60-100 nm. The increase of cold-work strain from e = 0.3 to e = 1.9 leads to the increase in the recoverable strain (7.5 to 8%) and maximum recovery stress (900 to 1450 MPa).
