Change propagation in a PLM context: on the use of associations for products and processes development

Résumé traduit

The current Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems can capture a part of the design intent by creating links between objects. This increases the productivity during product development, and helps maintain the coherence of the product definition. This means that the CAD systems establish the links as well as their use. In the near and extended future, we can assume that these links will carry technological information corresponding to the know-how implied in specific tasks. For example a 'technological
link' can be established between a shaft and a hole corresponding to an H7f6 adjustment, determined by the designer to satisfy any functional objective. This technological information defined between the two entities will be stored in the technological link. During the modification of the diameter, the geometry of the parts can be recalculated as a result of this link.

Measured in specific simulations, the benefits brought by these links are very important (around 90%). The potential of these links is huge, but their implementation at an industrial scale remains a problem due to the wide range of links. As a matter of fact, it is necessary to have as many links as there are tasks to be performed. Furthermore, the application's uses should, eventually, go beyond the fields covered by CAD systems, to encompass the product design-model (CAD models, assemblies, lists of components, etc.) and its associated processes (process planning, tooling, numerical control programming, etc.).

In this thesis, we propose a taxonomy of the different types of technological links required to support the set of tasks in the area of product development. The terms on which the taxonomy relies are: association, relation, link, and constraint. This contribution also introduces a new generic model named the 'GAPOM' model. This model allows for the creation of trade oriented applications based on the implementation of technological links. The model proposed uses the concepts of aggregation and decomposition applied to different objects, namely: the view, the part, and the feature. We also introduce a method of application in ten steps. The model is validated by its implementation to three trade oriented applications. We finally evaluate the way in which the terminology, the concepts and the model apply in the context of an industrial change management process.
