Atmospheric surface layer flow over forested areas

Résumé traduit

The first step to assess the wind resource of a proposed wind farm site is to install measurement masts to obtain wind velocity and wind direction measurements. Then a wind map of the entire site is obtained using the description of the terrain topography and surface roughness, as well as the measurements obtained at the masts locations. These measurements are then extrapolated to the entire site by using commercial softwares ( e.g. WAsP). These software provide good results for relatively flat terrain characterized by small surface roughness. However, for terrain covered by forest, they are not accurate. Since more and more canadian wind farms are being installed on sites covered by forest, it is essential to develop wind prediction models that can be used over forested areas. Thus, the main goal of this project is to develop and validate a method that could be used to predict the wind flow over forested areas.

The proposed method is a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model that uses an analogy between the forest and a porous media. The momentum losses within the forest were represented by a source term in the momentum equations. The source term was represented by a drag coefficient and a leaf area density. The turbulence was mode led using a modified k-є turbulence model where source terms were added to the k and є equations. The mathematical model was solved using the software FLUENT 6.2. The proposed method was validated using experimental measurements from other authors. This method was used to simulate two cases : fully developed wind flow within and above a forest, and wind flow in the neighboring of a forest edge. Results indicate that the proposed method precisely predicts the wind velocity above and within the forest, but underestimated the turbulence in the lowest part of the forest. Also, the applicability of the WAsP software near a forest edge was discussed and general recommendations were given. Results indicate that WAsP's predictions are very sensitive to the position of the meteorological station. To minimize prediction errors, it is suggested to position the meteorological station outside the forest or five times above the forest eight over the forest.
