Implementation of technological links as a tool to capture design intent in aerospace engineering

Résumé traduit

Modern CAD tools are used in product development to automate tedious and repetitive modeling tasks which consume the invaluable time of specialized designers. The time saved aids the design process by decreasing development cycles time, allowing automatic propagation of engineering changes to the impacted parts of the assembly, and by maintaining data consistency within models.

The concepts of entity typification and technological links, which are established between imprints and pseudo-imprints of associated objects, as well as the concept of contextual features, have all demonstrated that they can contribute in effectively structuring the exploitation of CAD tools and allow a part of the design intent to be captured within models. In the instance of joggles and cut-outs, CAD tool application already exhibited substantial time savings (about 90%).

This paper is foremost a step in the generalization of concepts enumerated previously by the development of a new application for CAD tools drawn from industry: the modeling of lightening pockets found in the skin panel assembly of airplane fuselages. This application uses the design assembly of certain structural elements of the skin panel (stringers and frames), and the know-how of this specific field, to determine the geometry of the pocket. The application then automatically inserts this new Pocket feature into each quadrilateral formed by two stringers and two frames. This pocket feature is also contextual linked using persistent associations which allow the automatic propagation of changes that guarantee the coherence of data within the models. The time savings of the use of this application are about 98,5%.

We also consider in this paper the economic implication and the capacity of implementing, on a large scale, the know-how capturing tools of modern CAD (UDFs, VB programs, etc.), allowing for the automation of modeling tasks. Although definitive answers have yet to be found, this discussion sheds new light on the desirable degree of automatism CAD tools can provide.
